3-letter word game (easy mode)

The gentlest board: three letters, six guesses, endless rounds.

Unlimited - 3 letters

About the 3-letter mode

Three-letter words are the perfect on-ramp to Wordle-style games. The rules are identical to the classic game - guess the hidden word, watch the tiles turn green, yellow or gray - but with only three letters to pin down, rounds are fast and forgiving. It is the mode we recommend for kids, new players, and anyone who wants a quick brain warm-up between meetings.

Don't mistake easy for trivial, though: the answer pool holds 299 curated everyday words (all family-friendly), and with thousands of valid 3-letter guesses there is still room for a clever opening. Speedrunners: try to keep a one-guess-win streak going.

Good starting words for 3-letter puzzles

With three slots you want vowels working immediately. EAR, OIL and TEA each test a vowel pair plus a common consonant. A strong two-guess opening is EAR then OIL: six distinct letters including four vowels, which locks down most of the answer pool. More openers and the reasoning behind them live in the strategy guide.

3-letter mode FAQ

Is the 3-letter mode good for kids?

Yes - it is the mode we built with families in mind. The answer list is hand-filtered to common, school-friendly words, rounds take under a minute, and the on-screen keyboard means no typing skills are needed.

Do I still get six guesses?

Yes, the classic six. With only three letters that is generous, which is exactly why this mode is the best place to learn how the green, yellow and gray clues work.

Can adults enjoy 3-letter rounds?

Absolutely - treat it as a speed mode. Try to solve in two guesses or fewer, or use it to warm up before the 6-letter and 7-letter boards.
